Approaching Bird Island
Isla San Jorge, or better known as Bird Island is a group of several rocky islands located 27 miles south east of Puerto Peñasco, and approximately 11 miles from the shore, outside the Bay of San Jorge. Bird Island provides a very important biological sanctuary for a wide variety of creatures including birds, mammals and sealife. And like many of the other islands in the gulf, it is classified as a federal zone, and in 1978 was decreed a Reserved Area of Shelter for migratory birds and wild fauna.
Bird Island
These islands are of great interest to tourists, mainly for the different species of birds that find shelter here, such as: Tropic birds, marine swallow, blue footed boobies, very elegant seagulls and more. Also there are great herds of sea lions, one of the biggest colonies of sea lions in the Gulf of California.
Sealions of Bird Island
Around these waters, there are many excellent places for water sports such as scuba diving and snorkeling, thanks to the great variety of fish and other sealife found in this area. Also a pleasant experience is to watch the different birds and other animals found in our region, but its recommended not to get too close to the animals so as not to make them feel threatened. Keep in mind to take certain care and precautions near the bull sea lions, due to their aggressive behavior.
